Need to plan some mini-lessons for Black History Month…
What have you guys been doing?
My favorite, tried and true social studies unit that I created in my first year and have played with ever since: African American Artists. It leans heavily on musicians, because that’s super accessible in kindergarten, but we talk about children’s book authors (Donald Crews and family!!), sculptors and painters (John Scott! George Harriman!), actors (SO MANY) dancers (the AADE!) and playwrights (Suzan Lori-Parks!). One or two people a day for the whole month! LOVE IT. It’s my favorite. It can be as easy as playing two Ella Fitzgerald songs and talking about how her voice makes us feel and as complicated as you want it to be.
